Employees at the Flint Hills Resources Peru facility reached a safety milestone last
month, surpassing the previous record for consecutive safe work days at the facility. As of Dec.
10, the plant had gone 900 days without a recordable incident. The prior record was 868 days.
“This is a remarkable accomplishment and a testament to each and every one of our employees’
efforts to identify hazards, follow environmental, health and safety procedures and practices, and
work safely day in and day out,” noted Mark Condon, Flint Hills Resources plant manager.
“Safety will always be our top priority.”
The Flint Hills Resources Peru facility is a chemical intermediates plant producing expandable
polystyrene. A safe work day is defined as one without the occurrence of a recordable
occupational injury or illness as defined by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration
(OSHA). Any injury or illness that requires more treatment than simple first aid must be recorded
and reported to comply with OSHA regulations. The site has also been recognized under OSHA’s
Voluntary Protection Programs where it earned VPP STAR status. This VPP status is reserved for
top performing facilities in both personal and process safety.
“Flint Hills takes great pride in our safety record and will continue working to prolong this streak
well into the future,” Condon said.
